Help students learn to talk about a time when they were scared or sick.
We Are Home Flipbook FlipbookPre-teach the concept of target vocabulary by emphasizing and modeling these core words during routines prior to the introduction of the book or activity. Talk about current events and ask the person to share how they feel.
Use the included chart to talk about social distancing. Model the phrase "far away." Show the person what a safe distance looks like. Model other vocabulary and encourage them to talk about how and when they can use these words.
Read the book “We Are Home.” Encourage the student to find the words as they appear in the story. Model the words if the student can’t find them. You can also hide other vocabulary on their device so only the words for the story are showing.
Encourage your student to talk about how they feel throughout the story. Give them time to express whatever is on their mind.
Use the writing template so the student can express their different feelings. What makes them feel that way? They can write with single words, phrases, or more. You may need to explain what the emoticons represent or let them determine for themselves.
Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable or Bluetooth connector. Have the student use their device to enter the words into a Word document.
If you are using WordPower (Saltillo or TouchChat), save the person’s writing using Stories and Scripts within the vocabulary. Learn more about this feature here.
Use the included Choice Board to help your student make decisions about what activities they would like to do. Have them use their device to tell you what they choose. You can also talk about things they "like" and "don't like." Change the board to include things important to your student.
Use the Scavenger Hunt maps with your student. They can play indoors or outdoors. There is even one to help them find core vocabulary. Have them use their device throughout the activity to tell you when the find something or if they need help.
If your student loves Legos, we have a fun Tic Tac Toe game based on simple Lego objects. Students can use their device to tell you which one they want to make. Once they make it, can mark that square and then make another to get Tic Tac Toe. They can also use their device to ask for help or tell you they are done. We have provided a Tic Tac Toe board as well as a second board showing the needed blocks. All objects can be made from the classic box of Legos.
Can-Do Cards are fun, motivational activities the entire family can do to help your child improve their communication skills. Most activities will fit nicely into your daily family routines.

Common Core Standards
Below are references to the Common Core Standards organized by grade level and associated with the goals and objectives of this lesson plan. When considering which standards to target in your lessons with students, begin by looking at the standards at your student’s grade level. You may need to refer to that same standard at a lower grade level to adapt your lesson to best meet the needs of your student.
