2021 has been a difficult and frustrating year for so many of us. But as we approach the beginning of 2022, I think it’s important for all of us to remember all the things that we have accomplished this past year, despite the difficult challenge of the pandemic.

For example, I’m proud of what I have accomplished in 2021 as a member of my city’s advisory commission on disabilities, and as an advocate for disabled people. I put a lot of energy into campaigning for accessible beach mats, including speaking to the city council and mayor about this issue.  Apparently they listened to me. In July, council requested that city administration look into installing mats, and according to a Nov. 30 city memo, permits for mats in three locations have been submitted to the California Coastal Commission for approval. Once the state commission gives the go-ahead, the mats might be installed as soon as late April.

Additionally, I’ve advocated for the city to make improvements to its archery range, so that people with disabilities can get access to it. It took two years to get the city to do something.

I also supported introduction of a disability curriculum in our local schools district. I think that it is very important for students with disabilities and their peers to learn about disabilities.  When I was in high school, my high school had a disability awareness week in October, but it’s important to do more of this sort of education.

I also agreed to do several AAC workshops next year, and worked with a friend of mine will continue the teen support group.

Lastly, I became a vice-chair of the city’s advisory commission on disabilities, a position that I hope to use to become an even stronger advocate.

I aim to continue pushing for more positive change in 2022, and I hope that you all will, as well. There’s a lot that you can do to raise awareness of issues affecting people with disabilities, from commenting on social media to speaking out at government meetings. It feels good to be taking action—and who knows, you may end up with some progress in your community.
