Emoticons are symbols used to convey emotional content. You can use these with your AAC device user to play a simple game that helps them learn to express their feelings with their device.
Draw simple faces expressing different emotions (or find some art online)
Glue the emoticons onto poker chips or cardstock.
Have each student choose a chip and use their device to describe something that makes them feel that way. You can scaffold this activity by having beginning users say a simple word or phrase that makes them feel that way and have you more advanced user required to say a complete sentence.
Example:
- Beginning user – no or no more
- Intermediate user – I do not talk.
- Advanced user – The teacher makes us be quiet in the hall.
