As described in the CoreScanner manual, there are eight “cornerstone” words which provide the foundation for future vocabulary growth within this program. These words will remain in place, as will their auditory prompts, while additional vocabulary is introduced and expanded upon over time. Any word choice selected should be deemed a correct response at this level.
When presented with a small bank of early developing core vocabulary words (i.e. more, stop, go, hello, mine, play, on, turn) the child will use her/her most effective access method to navigate between individual words one at a time, and select any one of the presented words in order to elicit responses from an engaged conversational partner within word play and exploration activities.
The activities have been designed to assist parents, teachers and clinicians in eliciting the use of 81 early developing, high frequency core vocabulary words with children who are using a speech generating device as their primary mode of communication. Although the activities that have been provided here may be used with any child needing exposure to and practice with a core set of vocabulary, these particular activities have been designed primarily for children who present with significantly limited fine and gross motor control and may therefore not have the ability to interact with objects, toys and games as readily as their same age peers.
